Headlights & RV Lighting: How To Keep The Dark Away After The Sun Sets

Nighttime driving can be tricky in an RV, especially with poor lighting. When your vehicle weighs well over 7,500 lbs, the last thing you need is a dim view of the road ahead. In addition to asking the Lord to guide our way, it is best to ensure your lighting system is in top shape before you head out on your next trip.

Common RV Lighting Challenges

  • Hard-to-Find Bulbs: Unlike your daily driver, RV replacement lamps may not be in stock at a local auto parts store. It is best to keep a couple of backups on hand. If you are struggling to track down the right fit, you can find a wide selection of fog lights, blinkers, and signals here.
  • Cloudy Lenses: Over time, composite lenses get scratched and oxidized, which dramatically cuts your light output. A simple DIY fix is using toothpaste and a rag with a bit of elbow grease to buff out those tiny cracks. Rinse and repeat until your headlamps are bright and clear again.
  • Alignment Issues: Properly aligned headlamps improve visibility of the road and the shoulder while preventing you from blinding oncoming traffic. If you want to handle this yourself, here is an excellent guide on how to align your headlamps.

Technical Troubleshooting

Electrical issues become more common as an RV ages. A frequent problem is voltage drop—losing just 2-4 volts can reduce your headlight brightness by nearly half! When troubleshooting, be sure to measure voltage while the lights are under load. Relay switches, bad fuses, or frayed wires are often the culprits behind dimming lights.

Before you “tear into” your RV for a replacement, be sure to check your owner’s manual or a specific tutorial for your exact year, make, model, and chassis type. Having the right guide makes all the difference when you’re elbow-deep in a repair.

The team at Henderson’s Line-Up in Grants Pass, Oregon, cares about your safety. We want to ensure you have high-quality bulbs and a lighting system in peak working condition before you hit the road.

Do I Need An Inspection?

At Henderson’s Line-Up, inspections are a big part of what we do every day.
