Tips for Proper 5th Wheel
& Trailer Hitching
Keep these 7 tips handy
next time you travel
Make sure your hitch is compatible with your 5th Wheel or Trailer.
Match ball size to your coupler size on your hitch so there’s no play between the two.
Match maximum trailer weight allowed for your tow vehicle to your trailer’s GVWR.
Your tow vehicle’s hitch weight capacity should match the loaded tongue weight of the trailer.
Your braking controller should match the number of wheels you’re braking on your trailer.
Make sure your tow vehicle wiring matches the trailer’s wiring code – and that you have an adequate ground wire from frame to receptacle. It’s a good idea to color-code the wires so you don’t accidentally mis-match them.
Finally, make sure your rear vehicle suspension coincides with your tow vehicle’s rear axle loaded weight.
